Explore

Experience the best of Coromandel with three stunning tramps on the east and west coasts, and up the picturesque craggy ranges that join them together. A gentle walk into a lush Kauri grove, a climb to the summit of the iconic Pinnacles, steeped in our early logging history - and walk a secluded coastal track that many locals don't even know about. Three diverse tramps in three days, this escape is suitable for those new to tramping with a reasonable level of fitness.

Taste

Gin - Visit a brand new distillery in Thames and hear from owners on how they harness flavours and aromas from the wild to infuse into their gin and other distillates. Think damson plum and wood-aged Manuka infused gin - yum!

Fermenting - Join a private fermenting masterclass - Kombucha, kimchi and more run by award-winning chef Brad King and master gardener/harvester Nikki Murray-Orr from the Falls Retreat Bistro. Fermenting is a simple process but it needs to be done correctly, and in this workshop you will discover how we can manage microbial bacteria to produce highly nutritious food. Learn more about the fermentation process and why it’s so important to our health. You will learn how to make your own fermented vegetables and drinks at home to enjoy great gut health.

Coffee - Take home a bag of locally roasted Pinnacle Coffee after enjoying freshly brewed cups at Mangotahi Lodge. Lodge owners Karyn & Coxy roast their own beans to produce their very own 'Pinnacle Coffee'. The only coffee in New Zealand with ethically sourced beans from Vietnam.

Relax

Stay at Mangotahi Lodge, a luxury bed & breakfast nestled in the Kauaeranga with valley views, a fire pit to gather around and a hot tub to sooth tired muscles while gazing at the stars. Enjoy healthy and hearty home cooked meals using local sourced produce. All wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided when you state your preferences on booking.

About Coxy

Kauaeranga Valley local Stephen Cox (Coxy) is an enthusiastic tramping guide with oodles of energy and a whole peninsula of coastal tracks and craggy ranges to explore in the Coromandel. As a hut warden at the Pinnacles Hut, Coxy knows the track and area intimately. What most don't know about him is that he's a quiet coffee aficionado. He's also an engineer. The two combined have led him and partner Karyn to dive into the world of roasting coffee beans - and locals are loving their roasts. Coxy and Karyn will make you feel like old friends so you can relax and enjoy the surroundings in your own space, or join in at your leisure.

What people have said about tours with Coxy:
"What a great experience. Such a cool way to see the Coromandel. Hike, eat delicious gourmet food, hike, eat delicious gourmet food, repeat...So well thought out and all the locations offered another perspective to such a beautiful part of the country. So much beauty packed into such an awesome trip. Coxy was AMAZING! So funny, knowledgeable and with such an authentic Kiwi charm. The accomodation was beautiful and peaceful. We stayed literally in the heart of a rainforest gorge with native birds flying all around us and a wood fired spa to have a soak (with a wine) in after a day of lots of walking. Paradise." - Chris, Auckland

Your escape itinerary day by day

Day One: Saturday

5km / 2.5 hours walking (easy grade)
Meet your group and guide at Mangotahi Lodge to check in at 9am, before a short trip up the Thames Coast to the start of our Waiomu Kauri Grove walk. A stunning trail leads us to on of the best examples of remaining Coromandel Kauri groves on a lush ridge line. Soak in the surroundings underneath these majestic giants while Coxy lays out a gourmet picnic lunch to share. After our walk, we visit a new distillery in Thames and hear from owners on how they harness flavours and aromas from the wild to infuse into their gin and other distillates. Back at the lodge nestled in the beautiful Kauaeranga Valley you can relax with some local Mercury Bay wine and Matatoki Cheese Barn cheese, in your room or in the hot tub! Tonight’s delicious three-course meal is prepared in-house by our lovely host Karyn.

Day Two: Sunday

17km / 7-9 hours hiking (hard grade)
This morning we fuel up ready to take on some spectacular craggy terrain on the popular but challenging Pinnacles hike. Traversing through groves of nikau palms, huge rata trees, and across streams and swing bridges, we make our way up to the Hut. The last section of the track leading to the jagged summit of the Pinnacles is steep with ladders and requires some scrambling, but for those up for the challenge the reward is magnificent panoramic views across the Coromandel region. After lunch at the Hut, we head back down the track and it's a short drive back to Mangotahi to put our feet up and enjoy another meal and night under the stars, gathered around the fire pit.

Day Three: Monday

9km / 4-5 hours hiking (medium grade)
Enjoy breakfast at a leisurely pace before we head to the coast for our walk from Homunga Bay to Waihi Beach. Feast your eyes upon the white sand beaches, turquoise coloured water and magnificent Pohutakawa trees as we wind our way around three bays, stopping for a picnic lunch on the beach. When our hearts have had enough of the endless coastal views and sea breezes, we head to local bistro in the Karangahake Gorge - The Falls Retreat, for a private fermenting masterclass. Learn the art of fermenting - Kombucha, kimchi and more run by award-winning chef Brad King and master gardener/harvester Nikki Murray-Orr. Head back to Mangotahi Lodge and say farewell to your new friends before driving home with some special memories (and a bag of Pinnacle coffee to savour the escape!).

Note: We will always endeavour to stick as closely to this itinerary as possible to deliver the best experience to you. If anything outside of our control should change as it does from time to time, we will substitute elements of this itinerary to reflect the same value and level of amazing!
