Itinerary
Itinerary
Day One: Sunday
5km (3 miles) / 2 hours hiking (easy grade)
Native forest serenity, coastal luxury
Your local guide will collect you from Auckland before heading to the west side of the Coromandel Peninsula for our first walk in Waiomu Valley. A stunning trail leads us to the best remaining Kauri grove on the peninsula in a lush and diverse ecological area. A gourmet picnic lunch in nature with some freshly made bush tea to soak up the serenity before the walk out. A stop in a boutique coffee roasters Pinnacle Coffee to chat to Steve and Karyn, who import UTZ farm certified Vietnamese coffee beans to Thames, where they roast their full bodied blends. From here, we head just north of the coastal settlement of Waihi Beach where we will be based two nights at the stunning Orokawa Bay Retreat. A bottle of bubbles and pre-tour briefing will be waiting. Chat to Gerard our local chef as he prepares a special meal with local ingredients - all sourced locally and some from his kitchen garden! Wine matches to perfect the evening.
Day Two: Monday
9km (5.5 miles) / 4-5 hours hiking (medium grade)
The epitome of charm and a touch of gin
Enjoy breakfast this morning at a leisurely pace before we head a few minutes from the lodge to the coast for our through-walk from Homunga Bay to Waihi Beach. Feast your eyes upon the white sand beaches, turquoise coloured water and magnificent Pohutakawa trees as we wind our way around the bays, stopping for a picnic lunch and perhaps a swim on the beach. When our hearts have had enough of the coastal views we head back to our lodge to relax for a few hours in the hot tub, or get lost in a book. As an optional extra, your guide can also take you to the Bowentown heads or into Waihi beach town. The late afternoon calls for something special and we have local award-winning gin brewer-turned-distiller visiting the lodge for a private gin tasting (with a gold twist) before chef Gerard prepares another sumptuous meal.
Day Three: Tuesday
19km (12 miles) / 8 hours hiking (easy grade)
History and hidden swimming holes in the Waitawheta Gorge
A short drive via a stop for coffee to a hidden valley this morning leading to the Waitawheta River. Following in the footsteps of pioneers on the old logging tramway as it meanders along the river through the spectacular cliffs and bluffs of the gorge. With a suspension bridge, waterfall and old logging site along the way, this is a varied track steeped in history. There are a few great swimming spots along the way, or simply take your boots off and bathe your feet in the river. We wander as little or as far as we like on this trail, returning via the same route. Back at base, soak weary legs in the hot tub before another chef-prepared feast, showcasing fresh local ingredients and a well-earned glass of wine to toast the day's adventure.
Day Four: Wednesday
8km (5 miles) / 3.5 hours hiking total (easy grade)
Waterfalls, chocolate and secret coves along the east coast
We trade the west coast for the east this morning, heading north to Wentworth Falls, where a 6km return walk rewards us with tumbling cascades and native bush at every turn. From there it's on to Whangamatā, where Port Road Project serves up a café lunch worth lingering over - and lingering is exactly what we'll do, with time to swim, wander the sand, or simply soak up the sun on the beach. Then things get sweet: at Coromandel Chocolate, the peninsula's only chocolatier, Thomas takes us behind the scenes for an exclusive tour and tasting, with a stash of treats to take away for later. On the way back down the coast, we duck into Whiritoa for a short walk to Waimama Bay - a hidden gem of white sand and clear water. But save some energy: tonight's dinner comes with a twist. Back at Orokawa Bay Retreat, we're swapping our walking boots for aprons, joining Gerard in the kitchen to cook up tonight's feast alongside him - a rare chance to learn a few of his secrets before we sit down to enjoy what we've made together.
Day Five: Thursday
5km (3 miles) / 2 hours hiking (easy grade)
Gold, gorges and a final feast to remember
We start the day with a bag pack and a farewell to Orokawa Bay, tracing the Karangahake Gorge on the Crown Track from Dickey's Flat back to Karangahake. Winding through old mining country past mine relics, tunnels and good swimming holes, this easy walking track follows the historic gold mining pipeline and passes the remains of the extensive Karangahake mines along the way - a fitting final wander through the landscapes and history that have shaped this journey. From here, we swap boots for something altogether more indulgent: an absolute dream of a long lunch, an immersive dining experience tucked away in the middle of the bush. A taste of New Zealand featuring native ingredients awaits, designed to leave a lasting impression on your palate and your soul - the perfect way to toast the trip before we begin the journey back up to Auckland.
Note: This itinerary should be seen as a guide only and is subject to change at any time due to elements outside our control. We will always endeavour to stick as closely to this itinerary as possible to deliver the best experience to you. The above doesn't detail all 'Nosh' experiences in full as we like to keep some things a surprise!

Easy, with one moderate walk (Homunga Bay, day 2)
3 – 8 hours of hiking per day. We've curated our walks over the week to offer a balance of a shorter or easier walk, followed by a longer walk, followed by a shorter walk for the best flow and experience.
Carrying a small personal day backpack for your personal gear such as water, lunch and a rain jacket.
Track conditions
Track surfaces on our Coromandel Coastal Luxe tour vary, and are on a mix of well maintained paths, farm tracks, classic 'kiwi-style' tramping tracks with more rugged terrain where you will be walking over tree roots, mud and rocks. You will get the most out of this tour if you have a moderate level of fitness and some hiking experience, but it isn't necessary. Our guides ensure that the pace is dictated by the group and allow plenty of time for short breaks for water, refreshments, photos and interesting stories on the way. For us, it's about the journey, not the destination. There are options for lodge only days most days (except travel transfer days).
See our training guide for preparation tips.
EXPLORE WITH US
Our Nature
We've carefully hand selected our combination of public and private tracks throughout the Coromandel and heart of the North Island for their beauty, diversity of terrain and landscapes, flora, special features and conservation values. We think you'll be hard-pressed to find a hiking tour with more diversity in a relatively small geographical area. The programme of walks on this tour is designed to be easier graded walks, with one moderately graded walk, and one longer (19km walk). Some of our tracks are well-known and are too scenic to leave off our tours, others are so secret that not even the locals know about them!
SAVOUR WITH US
Our Nosh
After a day spent exploring, gather over a view and enjoy a lovingly prepared warm meal, featuring fresh, local ingredients. While the wine and conversation flow, everyday life is left behind. Breakfast is an option of cooked or continental to fuel you properly for your day of hiking. Lunches are freshly packed for you in the mornings and we have plenty of snacks for the journey. Evening meals are prepared with fresh Coromandel flavours and are served with a selection of New Zealand wine or beer. Our 'Nosh' experiences include tastings at our favourite spots on the coast as detailed in the inclusions above.
RELAX WITH US
Orokawa Bay Retreat
Perched high above its namesake bay, Orokawa Bay Retreat is a hilltop sanctuary with sweeping, ever-changing views across the Bay of Plenty coastline. The retreat features four beautifully appointed ensuite bedrooms, arranged around a lovely internal courtyard, with an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area that flows out to embrace the view. There's plenty of outdoor space to soak it all in, including a private outdoor hot tub where you can watch the lights of Waihi Beach flicker on as evening falls. It's the perfect place to rest, recharge and feel thoroughly spoiled between adventures
